What’s the Point of Business Broadband Anyway?

Posted in Emptor Infos, School of Technology, Telecommunication Hall on January 4th, 2009

Well, considering that now many parts of the country have access to broadband and it’s predicted that 82 percent of the UK will have broadband by 2013, and also that now it’s so cheap, it really is a must for any business. Even for those businesses that don’t depend on the internet to sell, just having a fast broadband connection can be of value to a business.

We are so used to having things “now”. People buy products and services on the internet with just a few clicks, we send communications by email instantly; so naturally we would expect a business to reciprocate in a similar manner. This is where a broadband connection is of importance in providing that customer service.

There are many money saving factors to be taken into consideration too. A fast broadband connection may reduce the amount of business travel you have to do as conference calls and video calls can be set up easily on internet phones. By using a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone you can make cost free phone calls through your broadband connection between other VOIP phones. Sending emails rather than letters should also reduce your postage costs.

But why the need for Business Broadband, surely a domestic package fulfils all the same criteria? Don’t be tempted to go for a domestic package for your business broadband; a good business broadband service can offer much faster download speeds, far greater reliability and, crucially, free 24 hour support when things go wrong. Most of us have experienced the torture of customer service on a 50 pence per minute helpline, not what you want for your business to keep running smoothly. Business broadband gives essential support which will get your internet connection quickly back up in an emergency.

Most business broadband deals will include additional security measures which you won’t find with home broadband, so important files and personal information are kept safer. And many domestic packages are geared around usage in the evenings and weekends, meaning you may find your access capped if you “download too much” during the day; Business broadband packages are offered at different levels to cater for different sized enterprises and most business broadband providers will offer an inclusive static IP address.

Low Cost Gaming Notebooks Possibly around the Corner

Posted in School of Technology on September 3rd, 2008

Are you able to recall the time when gaming laptops were not so affordable? The units were sold in tiny numbers but each laptops had a great profit margin. Everyone desired this type of notebook, but at the price they were going for it was basically not affordable. They were like the show piece of what was capable with laptop computer technology, the best laptop computers around. Having said that the majority of us most likely didn’t buy laptop computers of this nature because of the cost. As the international computer manufacturers appreciate the potential revenues in gaming laptops, the market is transforming.

If mass manufactured, manufacturers can create enormous margins on gaming laptops. As the markup on mass market laptops have gotten so tiny, manufacturing specialized gaming laptops is one strategy to regain a larger gross margin. With their bottomless marketing resources I’m confident they can persuade anyone to buy laptop computers like these. Do the local resellers really stand a chance with this kinda competition? With the resources at their disposal they can effortlessly finish the smaller competition. Purchasers will additionally gain a lot more peace of mind when spending a lot of cash.

I reckon they certainly are producing some of the best laptop computers available to purchase. This is one opportunity the local competition need to use to their advantage. This is a massive sales feature that must be said. These picky buyers are normally really familiar with the technology and can judge each of the specs by themselves. For these types of consumers, the specs of a system normally matter more than the design of it.

All gamers concur that it is a great thing. One method that the smaller resellers might use is to cut margins in to sell greater numbers of units. Don’t forget that’s just my point of view on the current trends. I’m not confident if the overall price of laptops will be reduced but new units are normally at specific prices. Strong Competition generally makes companies to make better products and give greater value so that sounds good.

Choosing A Web Host

Posted in School of Technology on May 25th, 2008

There are some simple rules to follow when looking for a web host. The first rules is to avoid free hosts whenever possible, it is easy to think that a free service is preferable to paying a monthly fee however with web hosting this is defiantly not the case.

Paid hosting has several important advantages over free hosting. Firstly you will receive more useful features with paid hosting. Technical support will be much better with help available when you need it. Generally speaking Paid hosts will have much faster connections to the internet so your site will appear quicker. Most importantly with paid hosting you won’t have to display a banner on each page advertising the Hosting Company and advertising to the world that you are on a free host. With excellent hosting packages starting from $6.99 per month there is no reason why you shouldn’t go with a paid host.

The second simple rule concerns what operating system to choose. You will find hosts offering you Windows Hosting or Linux Hosting, it is tempting to choose windows as it’s a name everyone knows and many people mistakenly believe that because their PC runs windows they need a Windows Host but in this case they’d be wrong. Whichever hosting package you choose you will receive a control panel through which you administer your site these are graphical environments through which you can control many aspects of your website from configuring your web mail and installing forum software to creating a database. Take a lead from the marble halls of business most major companies host their websites on Linux Servers. Linux Servers generally runs faster and are more secure than a windows server. This is partly due to how the operating systems are built. Windows try to include every possible function in the base package whilst Linux allows the host company to add the functions they need.

The final thing to consider when choosing a host is the list of features they offer. If you don’t know much about html you can look for a host that supplies you with free website building software and some of the better ones will even supply free Domain names. You should look at a number of different companies and compare what they offer as standard with their hosting plans. Technical aspects to consider are; the amount of disk space available to you and how much monthly bandwidth you have to use. Look at how many email accounts you can have the more the better. Customer support features should not be overlooked check to see what their response time is and if it’s anymore than an hour look elsewhere, also consider if they offer a money back guarantee.

Look to see what additional services they include in the package for example do they offer daily backups? Make sure that they offer support for PHP as this is quickly becoming the programming language of choice with web programmers.

To conclude when choosing a website Host look for a paid host with Linux hosting and then compare the packages on offer from a variety of companies.

Things To Know About Gaming Laptops

Posted in School of Technology on May 5th, 2008

Notebook PC’s are becoming popular as well as powerful and mobile the gaming circle is showing increased interest towards gaming laptops. The performance gap should always remain between desktop gaming machines and gaming laptop computers however it’s becoming smaller all the time with advances in technology and it’s getting to a point where the levels of speed are becoming respectable for gamers. The versatility provided by laptops just makes the decision that little bit more easier, especially for students who can only have one or the other.

The video processor is one of the most crucial parts to consider when purchasing a gaming laptop. Two options exist in this deparment. Nvidia or ATi? ATi were left trailing once AMD aquired them and this has allowed Nvidia to be the current market leader. This technology seems to be changing every year and Nvidia seem to be in the driving seat at the moment.

When purchasing a gaming laptop the processor, memory and gpu are the most important parts you should consider. The processor should be a dual core processor like the intel core duo with a speed of over 2GHz as the minimum. 2GB is the minimum amount of memory need for playing games. For a gaming laptop you need to have a dedicated video card. Usually you get 256MB dedicated video memory. A mid to high end graphics processor should play all current and future games without any slow down. Anything above is a bonus and will just make frame rates a lot faster.

So gaming laptops do offer the functionality of a PC and if you want do some gaming then they play all PC games rather well too but what about gaming consoles? The PS3 and Xbox 360 could offer a threat to the thought of a gaming laptop. Choosing just one is still difficult as gaming laptops still command a high price tag for the added features and benefits they provide but the majority of consumers would be willing to pay the price to get the best of both.

How to Fix Windows Registry

Posted in School of Technology on April 10th, 2008

Windows registry is a vital portion of the Windows 95, 98, XP
and NT operating systems. It is a database of sorts, keeping the
configuration settings and .dat files together. A program
installed in the computer is jampacked with information that is
automatically transferred to the registry. What are these pieces
of information? They can be about the hardware, the memory and
other Windows applications.

The registry is made up with a lot of folders and more
subfolders. “Hives” or keys also constitute a registry. These
hives are the following:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. You know why Windows know that a .doc file is
from a MS Word document? It’s because of this registry key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER. This key records the information of the user
currently using the computer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This contains hardware, security accounts
manager or SAM, security, software and system information.

HKEY_USERS. This key registers information on all the recognized
users.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. This computer registry key contains more
hardwore information.

HKEY_DYN_DATA. This is under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key that
deals with Plug and Play devices.

When you are in the registry, you will also come across with
these files: the string value that enables you to add a version
number, the binary value for specific attributes, and dword
which bears a semblance with binary value.

Is windows registry important? Of course, yes. Take note: if you
uninstall a program, the registry conks down and needs immediate
troubleshooting to get back in shape. Once your computer slows
down, you may chalk it up to the registry. But never worry,
because we’ve got lots of solutions to keep your windows
registry in first-rate condition.

Here are some ways to fix windows registry:

1. Utilize System Restore.

When something has been done to computer registry, there is one
way to fix it quickly and effortlessly: System Restore. System
Restore makes it possible to undo all the changes and to go back
to the system’s original condition.

2. Use available software for backup.

Every computer user must know that backup is not an option, it
is a mandatory step. There are utilities that can be used to
backup your registry files.

3. Use Registry Checker.

Windows is equipped with Registry Checker to scan registry
problems. Registry Checker will be optimized if you reboot
regularly.

Possibility of Martian Life?

Posted in School of Technology on April 5th, 2008

I believe the most likely time and environment for the origin of life on Mars would be never. The possibility of Martian life has been studied with evidence from ALH84001, PAHS, and the possibility of caves similar to those found in the United States.

First, David McKay, the head of a team of NASA scientists, recognized the ALH84001 traces in Martian biology. The bacteria-like structures in ALH84001, similar to life-functioning bacteria found on Earth, were mixed into carbonates when they were formed. This bonding process occurs at a temperature rate in which “life cannot function” because “organic molecules are unstable and break apart very quickly.” And, researchers concluded that the evidence (crystals) in ALH84001 could not have been produced by bacteria because the crystals were formed at high temperatures and had a “screw” dislocation meaning they were biologically produced.

PAHs are not strong evidence for Martian life because they are “nearly ubiquitous throughout the entire solar system.” They are found all around Earth and in the solar system so it is not a rare case that the PAHs found on Mars’ surface were from another source. For example, PAHs found in Antarctica from a Mars impact could have been formed because of a meteorite impact on Mars, thus displacing the PAHs.

Caves in the interior of Earth would not be possible without the sustainable conditions on the exterior, which allows humans and life to flourish on the surface. Conditions in the caves on Mars would be unbearable for any type of species to exist. Troglodytes on Mars would not have enough substances in the environment to survive as they do on Earth. By reading this article, it is not hard to attempt to believe that because animals on Earth’s caves have adapted to such intolerable environments that the same could happen on Mars. However this information is not proven or strong enough to base our way of scientific way of thinking on.
