Getting Real Interviews at Career Faires

Posted in Great Management Tips, Online Marketing, Unassigned on January 28th, 2010

Standing out at a Career Fair can make a difference in your job hunt. Job Faires are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Silicon Valley Career Fair in early 2010, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 job fairs scheduled for 2010 across the States.

How do you compete at a Job Fair? The contention can be noteworthy, but you can help yourself stick out from the gang with early preparation. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward step-by-step process to prepare. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the companies that are going and pick your objectives. Use the web to research the companies that are there before you go. Go to their websites and see if they have their jobs posted. Pick a sane number to go after, and get ready to spend up to an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 8 in a day, and 3-5 is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring company, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and exectuve names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You’ll end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job openings on the web, read them to see what the organization is looking for. Create a mapping of your achievements and skills to the requirements of the job. Make the terminology match. If the hiring organization calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The achievements should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘mini sales pitch’ for each likely organization/position combination. Write down a sixty second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally depicting why you are a key prospect for that position. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the company at the job kiosk.

Fourth, modify your resume for each position. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re going after. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the accomplishments and skills that most clearly match the job description. Especially at a Job Faire, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be obvious to see that you’re a match based on your resume.

Fifth, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a clearly tagged folder. Keep them in a light briefcase or folio.

Finally, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be fittingly groomed. Avoid strong cologne or perfume…use any eau de cologne or scent meagerly, if at all.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Caroline, my Chicago wedding photographer friend and I, are party planners and besties forever. She is wholeheartedly supportive of me and my fiance Chris. Last week, we looked through the vintage photographs of Aunt Sasha’s horrifically tacky Dallas wedding. Good times hilarious, but trends evolve. Can you find the a lesson about good form in that.

I can’t hardly restrain myself. Grandfather is so generous to be flying everyone in, and the ceremony will be at perhaps the tallest hotels! I can’t share the specifics cause who needs stalkers. Did I mention my fiance is a world-class composer and informed me he pulled some “strings” for the wedding reception. He hasn’t told me what yet. I fully expect it is going to blow our minds! We know that’s what a Chicago wedding is truly about. Cheers to the spirit of life.
